When the Movement Control Order (MCO) was announced on 18th March, education became a great challenge all across Malaysia as schools had no choice but to remain closed for a prolonged period. However, instead of becoming a setback, this sudden turn of events proved to be a great learning opportunity for Taylor’s International School (TIS).
A chance for personal development
Daily classes took on a different charm for TIS students as the school embarked on an online learning system ahead of the MCO. Many of the students found this unconventional classroom setting unique as it gave them a different perspective of the learning process.
Remote classes helped them relate their lessons to real life experiences more easily and also gave them the chance to further strengthen their competencies in communication, collaboration and many more areas. The confidence levels of many students grew as they learned to work independently.
They became more resilient too as they received guidance from teachers on how to deal with the challenges from the pandemic. These personal conversations which were held on a regular basis really helped safeguard their mental health.
Gaining wisdom through challenges
Meanwhile, TIS teachers themselves also learned from this remote classroom setup.
Academic staff quickly adapted their teaching methods for an online environment and became more proficient at utilising virtual tools. This has shown them the importance of flexibility and creativity when seeking to deliver engaging and memorable lessons.
One of the things that really helped them respond swiftly to this new normal was the Quantum Learning System that is practised at TIS. Under this approach, teachers were already trained to be flexible and innovative in the way they work.
Undoubtedly, there were many challenges that arose along the way. Lesson delivery had to be redesigned as what would usually work in a traditional classroom setting was not always suitable online. This challenged teachers to operate outside of their comfort zone.
However, armed with loads of determination, innovation and teamwork, TIS staff overcame these challenges.
Quantum Learning is an education system built on more than 30 years of research. It aligns teaching strategies with the way the human brain is naturally wired for learning. This effective methodology seeks to build a learning environment that is joyful, meaningful and challenging for students.
To date, Quantum Learning has already impacted more than 100,000 educators and millions of students around the world.
TIS introduced Quantum Learning as a school-wide teaching system in 2018. The school was subsequently accredited with the Quantum Learning Distinguished School (QLDS) Award earlier this year.
It is the first school in the world to receive such a recognition.
Moving forward
With the reopening of schools nationwide under the RMCO, life at TIS is returning to a new normal.
Home-based learning, although no longer the main platform for classes, will continue to be utilised wherever appropriate. In particular, it will benefit students who are unable to return to school premises due to being stuck outside Malaysian borders.
TIS also continues to maintain an effective communication system with students and parents in order to address any difficulties or concerns that may arise.
Overall, most parents at TIS expressed satisfaction with the way learning was managed throughout the Covid-19 ordeal.
This clearly shows how committed TIS is in creating an impactful learning environment for its students regardless of any unforeseen circumstances such as the current pandemic.
TIS is currently offering QLDS Special Bursary Awards for Years 7 and 8 students as well as a two-year scholarship programme for students pursuing their Year 10 and 11 studies. Do not miss this opportunity to be part of an award winning school that provides an exciting learning journey and prepares students for the possibilities of tomorrow.
