31 MAY 2019 - MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY
At the risk of coming across a little overbearing, I'd like to start this Eco-week newsletter with a reflection on what the purpose of education should be. Professor Dylan Wiliam states in his various publications that there are 'many reasons to educate young people and that any educational system has to pull off a delicate balancing act between them'. He lists the main reasons to be 'preparation for work', 'transmission of culture', 'personal empowerment' and 'preparation for citizenship'. The last one is of course the one I would like to explore further in connection with our Eco-week.

Dylan Wiliam describes Preparation for citizenship as 'preparing young people to take an active role in society and to make a difference in the world'. This ties in very well with what Taylor's schools wish to achieve for your child. Here, we want them to grow their leadership skills so they can contribute greatly in society and play an actively role in facing the challenges that we are faced with. In short, to make a difference! We also want our students to grow into global citizens. To be someone who can see the bigger picture, can appreciate different perspectives and can connect with people. Again, these are qualities our next generation will need to tackle global issues surrounding the sustainability of our lives on this planet!

In today's primary assembly we connected the kind of actions and attitudes that are highlighted during Eco-week with the Taylor's starfishes (core values) of 'Integrity' and 'Enjoyable Environments'. We also learned a new song connected to Eco-world: A Beautiful World.

Making a difference in the world starts with raising awareness, building toward a greater understanding. That's why events like 'Eco-week' are so important and a vital part of the education we offer at Taylor's.

We would like to wish those who are celebrating a happy Hari Raya. Looking forward to seeing all children back in school on Monday the 10th of June.
