28 February 2020 - Coming Together As A Community

Dear Parents,

It is lovely and such a blessing to be back at school on a normal day. There are not too many things greater than to see the playground full of happy, smiling children. I am sure you would agree with me. The purpose of this circular is to update the school community on all the steps that we took to combat this emergency. It was a fraught few days but I was so thankful of the way we all pulled and came together as a community. To gather over 3000 signatures is just simply amazing and I have to hand on heart, say thank you to all of you. I would also like to thank the Bomba for their magnificent response. At times they were excavating 6 meters in order to extinguish the flames. As a school we have learn a lot about dealing with crises like this. Though, I hope that we don’t have to put it to use again.

Chronological of Events

23rd February 2020

School contacted the Bomba due to fire at a neighbouring illegal dumpsite.

24th February 2020

School lodged reports to the following:

- Majlis Perbandaran Sepang (MPS)
- Minister of Environment

School implemented the Standard Operating Procedure for Haze within the school compound to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Principal wrote to the MP for Puchong and the ADUN of Kinrara.

25th February 2020

School lodged reports to the following departments:

- Police at Polis Putra Perdana Station - Department of Environment (DOE)

School continued to follow up with MPS and Minister of Environment.
25 firemen from the Cyberjaya, Subang, KLIA and Bukit Jelutong branch were on site to put out the fire.
Principal announced that the school is closed due to the worsening air quality.
Principal emailed to parents with the latest updates regarding the situation as well as to request for parents’ support in voicing out their concerns to the relevant department.

26th February 2020

5.30am: School takes the air quality reading.
6.00am: Air quality was still unhealthy; hence Principal made an announcement that school is closed for the day.
School Management visited the Fire Brigade, Police, Department of Land and Mine, and DOE to follow up on the situation.
API reading was taken and monitored every 2 hours throughout the day.
DOE came to install a portable API machine.
Parents started a petition to the DOE. The petition reached over 2,000 signatures by 27th February 2020.
Principal visited the dumpsite twice to follow up on the situation. Dinner was bought for the firemen to show appreciation.

27th February 2020

5.30am: School takes the air quality reading.
6.00am: Air quality was still unhealthy; hence Principal made an announcement that school is closed for the day.
API reading was taken and monitored every 2 hours throughout the day.
Fire Brigade department was still on site putting out the fire.
Principal visited the site to follow up on the situation.

28th February 2020

5.30am: School takes air quality reading.
6.00am: Air quality has improved, Principal visited the site and made an announcement that the school is reopened.
School continue to monitor the API reading.
