In perhaps one of the most unexpected weeks of our current generation, I want to point out a few things that highlight a world class school.
In the past couple of weeks we have had so many uncertainties and worries about what will happen and many people carefully looking at the way ahead. Families across the world are all affected in some way, but I want to highlight something closer to home. Something that I am so proud to see and be part of, something that will be remembered by many for years to come.
In the secondary school at TIS Puchong, in a matter of hours, not weeks, but hours, school teachers, learners and parents have had to adapt their learning environment completely. With only a few things unchanged like class lists and content, everything else has changed, like;
- Resources being used by teachers.
- The types of technology being used by all participants.
- The immediate specific environment around lessons.
- The change in adapting to timings.
- Families directly involved in the classroom environment, both from teachers and learners.
- How work is presented and communicated.
- Participation and interaction between learners and teachers.
Let me add that there are teachers who have their own families and commitments, with the same worries and concerns as all parents have, who still aim to focus on work as normal, remember now they are based at home. This will mean teachers that have two children at home with little support from their family who may live outside of KL, juggle life in the most incredible way. Their commitment to continue to support learners across major distances, their care and focus to help children, is unprecedented and cannot be measured or understated. These are
World Class Teachers.
For learners who have to adapt quickly to different experiences, who’s continual desire for learning is unending. Learners who are making their own efforts to go beyond the completely new infrastructure that was thrust upon them, to expand and develop further communication with each other. Learners supporting learners online like never before. These are
World Class Learners.
For the parents who have to continually be the solid foundation that makes these connections work between the teachers and the learners, whilst still managing an ever changing and uncertain environment and experience. The parents who join in with the shared learning opportunities and ensure their families are supported with all their needs at the same time. These are
World Class Parents.
In
one week in TISPC Secondary there are;
- 417 active Google classrooms for learners to interact with
- 597 Zoom lessons from the different subject teachers and tutors to learners
- 26 Zoom sessions with middle leaders and Secondary SLT management
- Close to 400 plus email messages visible for every google classroom, that’s 166,400 messages to read by class teachers
- Many thousands of individual Whatsapp messages that become essential parts of communication between all participants.
This is Taylor’s International School , Puchong, Secondary School. A
World class school and role model for the world.
I want to thank all of you, teachers, learners, parents and management for allowing me to be part of this and sharing this unforgettable and humbling experience.
