This year, our Year 6 learners have joined us on our IPC (International Primary Curriculum) journey. At the point of writing this letter, I have just returned from their Exit Point activity, bringing to a close their IPC unit on 'Space Scientists'. The children were sharing their learning with confidence and enthusiasm. It was clear for all that attended that they had learnt a great deal of facts about the universe and the solar system and how much they were able to use the vocabulary that comes with that knowledge! It was also great to see just how many parents were present to celebrate the learning with the children and the teachers!
Friday's Secondary School Sports Day brought an end to three days of sports fun and sports achievements. Starting with Early Years and Years 1-3 on Wednesday, followed by Years 4-6 on Thursday. A word of thanks to the committee and the PE Department for making this event such a wonderful community experience.
We would also like to extend a word of gratitude to the parents who organised an excellent Sports Day carnival which brought the whole community together! This year was the first year in which the carnival covered all three sports days and it is safe to say that this was a huge success.
A sports day is meant to be a celebration of sport in school and there are many advantages to be highlighted when it comes to sport and exercise. The benefits of exercise seem nearly endless because of its impact is system wide, affecting most physiological systems. It strengthens bones and muscles, helps you with your balance, regulates your appetite, reduces the risk of illness, helps with stress and so on! But there is also a direct benefit to learning. Exercise increases the blood flow in your brain, which in effect has a great effect on how much we can process and remember.
Sports days are events that all of us enjoy but of course seeing the children enjoying exercise, cheering each other on and gaining in confidence, makes us already look forward to next year’s Sports Day!
