It has been a wonderful week filled with lots of excitement as we opened our doors to prospective parents and children to TIS Puchong for our Open Day. We held talks and other workshops for parents to learn more about our International Primary Curriculum; children experienced taster sessions in both our Early Years and Primary classrooms. It was delightful to hear that our special visitors were given a warm welcome by our friendly students who displayed great confidence when speaking with the parents and children.

This week’s recipe is ‘Passion’. We all know that no doubt, to be able to do something well, just hard work wouldn’t suffice; one needs passion. Passion drives all great things to be achieved and if passion isn’t prevalent, we lose the meaning of learning. So how do we instil passion in our children?

According to TeachThought, an organisation dedicated to innovation in education through the growth of outstanding teachers, a study in 1985 ‘On the Brain of a Scientist: Albert Einstein’ found that Einstein’s brain was not significantly different from others, but what made his mind different was that his thinking and passion for learning were the basis of his genius.

In the classroom, teachers often find out students’ interest to be able to foster passion and personalise the learning to suit individual learners. An example of this would be that if a child is passionate about art, then the learning can be expressed in ways that are more creative. If another child is more interested in science, then that child would pose questions, research and experiment in different ways. Developing passion for different subject areas can also be encouraged when children work collaboratively to inspire, encourage each other to try something new and different. Children often develop passion when they observe their peers, teach and learn from one another.
