24 OCTOBER 2019 - MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY
Secondary school is very much in exam mode. Our Year 10 students have completed their end of year exams and gaining valuable feedback on how they did. The important part of going through exam papers is to understand areas in which deeper focus and more attention is needed in order to improve grades. For Year 11 students every bit of revision helps and it is useful to have a revision plan and stick to it. While revising at home, please help by providing a quiet space away from distractions, have regular short breaks and try to remain as calm as possible. There are classrooms available at school for students to study during the day.
Enrichment week is less than a month away. These provide experiences that children cannot get through usual holiday experiences. Enrichment is not really about the destination, it is more about what students can learn from each other in different situations. Inevitably, new friendships will be formed and with them come new experiences and greater enjoyment of school-life.
Glocal Enquiries
In GE students have been rotating between different classes and asked to teach a lesson they have planned relating to the topic 'Source Reliability'. Student have created sheets, made up interesting scenarios and challenged the class to Kahoot quizzes over three lessons.
Global Perspectives
Before Year 11 students left for study leave they revised the strengths and weaknesses of arguments (that will appear on the GP exam) by taking part in timed one on one debates on topics relating to GP. The rest of the class commented on and evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the arguments they put forward.
Mid-Autumn in TISKL
Falling on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival was the second grandest festival for Chinese after Chinese New Year. In Chinese culture, a round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion. Thus, the sharing and eating of round mooncakes among family members during the week of the festival signifies the completeness and unity of families.

Science is fun!
“Innovative method in teaching menstrual cycle. Thank you for making Science such an enjoyable experience for the students.”
The photos were taken when Year 7 students made bracelets for the menstrual cycle topic. There were using 4 different colours to represent 4 different stages. Apart from that, the Year 7 students built the sperm cells using plasticine and string with 1000x magnification compared to the real size. They also compared the model of female reproductive organs using fruits like pears and strawberries.
Our brains are meaning-making machines, searching for matches to previous experiences. Metaphors can liven up otherwise forgettable concepts, tapping them into the brain easily and quickly with the association.
